Creation of a vegetable garden
Mozambique, 2011
Social Issue
Mozambique has a population of 27 million people, with a life expectancy of 50 years, and ranks 180th according to the Human Development Index report. The project is carried out in Ibo, an island in northern Mozambique that has very high levels of poverty. 3,500 people live in Ibo, 53% of whom are under 14 years of age. The main economic activities of the Cabo Delgado province, to which the island belongs, are agriculture, livestock, artisanal fishing, trade, and logging. Ibo does not escape the problem of child malnutrition suffered by the rest of Mozambique.
Our Response
The project is carried out to try to alleviate this situation. It consists in the creation of a vegetable garden in the Nutritional Support Centre of the island. The Netri Foundation bears the material and staff costs of its implementation.
Expected Social Impact
Parallel to the creation of the garden, various actions are carried out:
- Training and awareness of all mothers and guardians about the importance of good nutrition.
- Training of centre staff so that they can tackle the different problems resulting from malnutrition.
- Preparation of a food safety model programme reproducible in other areas of Mozambique that serves to improve the population’s food hygiene and nutritional education.
