Construction of a dormitory / residence for high school students
Burundi, 2010
Social Issue
Burundi is one of the ten poorest countries in the world, after a war that has greatly undermined its economy and scared away any kind of outside investment initiatives. The country is in a desperate level of poverty in which the level of education, the illiteracy of the population, the shortage of teachers, the overcrowding of classrooms and the high drop-out rate in schools due to economic reasons are among the most pressing problems.
Our Response
The construction of the student residence involves the transformation of the Gatonde regional secondary school into a state secondary school. This way, it is possible to attract quality teachers (assigned by the state to public institutes) to an area that would otherwise lack access to high-quality staff.
The project consists in the construction and equipment of a dormitory for 150 students, with 12 toilets and 6 showers.
Expected Social Impact
This donation will benefit around 600 people, with an indirect impact of 3,250 other beneficiaries.
The effects and implications of this transformation for students are innumerable:
- Improvement of the general academic level and educational conditions.
- Increased prospects for access to university education.
- Improvement of housing, hygiene, and food conditions.
- Improving coexistence between ethnic groups in a post-war context.
- A reduction in the rate of school abandonment and migration of students to urban areas.
Therefore, the idea is to achieve a global improvement in the area at an educational, social, and economic level.
