Emergency Support against COVID-19
Kenya, 2021
Social Issue
The Tana River County, located in eastern Kenya, 120 kilometers from the border with Somalia, has a high Poverty Index, with 80% of the population living below the national poverty line.
Tana River County had the worst results for the final examinations for primary and secondary in Kenya.
There are various reasons that have led to these results, however, a major contributor to this is the extreme poverty of these families, who lack the means and resources to invest in the education of their children.
Our Response
Netri Foundation has been collaborating with Misión de Emaús since 2015 with the objective of improving the situation through the educational system. Netri financed the reopening of the St Joseph School (2015) and the construction of a library (2017). This way, they’re contributing to the infrastructure of their educational projects.
Normally, the operating costs of their educational projects are financed through other sources. Nevertheless, because of the pandemic and the floods that occurred in 2020, the income of the communities in the area has been gravely affected, reducing the capacity for families to pay school fees. On top of that, Misión de Emaús normally relies on donations to sponsor children without resources in the area, but with the crisis, there has been a decrease in contributions.
Given this, Fundación Netri will finance the enrollment of 127 children to the St. Joseph school for the 2021-2022 school year, facilitating the continuation of their studies. This donation is part of Netri’s initiative to help our partners deal with the hardships caused by Covid-19.
Expected Social Impact
The beneficiaries will be the 127 children that will be able to continue with their studies in the St. Joseph primary school.
