Construction and equipment of a library
Burundi, 2011
Social Issue
Burundi is one of the ten poorest countries in the world, after a war that has greatly undermined its economy and scared away any kind of outside investment initiatives. The country is in a desperate level of poverty in which the level of education, the illiteracy of the population, the shortage of teachers, the overcrowding of classrooms and the high drop-out rate in schools due to economic reasons are among the most pressing problems.
Nyabikere, with more than 50,000 inhabitants, is one of the largest cities in the Karusi province. This area suffered, like most of Burundi, years of endless wars.
Our Response
In a post-war context, it is especially important to fight poverty through education and access to accurate information.
Initially conceived as a school library, the needs of the area forced the project to be extended beyond the educational centre, eventually becoming the Bumenyi Cultural Centre.
Expected Social Impact
In addition to the construction of the library, this has also been provided with 3,156 books fully suitable for the national curriculum.
This donation will benefit around 1,760 students and teachers.
