Social Issue

Although Kenya’s economy ranks first among East and Central Africa’s, 36.9% of the population lives below the international poverty line of $1.90 a day, according to World Bank data. Most of the poor people in Kenya live in rural areas, mainly in the northeast of the country.

Our Response

Microloans are a powerful tool to give more opportunities to poor communities, so they can face the daily problems of lack of resources.

Kenya Women Finance Trust was founded in 1981 and in 2009 it already had 50 branches reaching practically every corner of the country. It is an institution focused on helping women groups so that 87% of their microcredit go to these groups and 100% of their clients are women whose daily income is around $1.50.

Expected Social Impact

With this investment of the Netri Foundation, it is estimated that KWFT will be able to provide 1,268 microloans to people who live mostly in rural areas so that they can sustain their businesses, and the poverty caused by the lack of economic opportunities is reduced.
