Zahu Birhane

I am a widow, 50 years old, and I live in the village of Adi Sarawat, in the Adwa district, Tigray region. I have four sons and three daughters. Two of them are already married, and the other five depend exclusively on me since my husband died several years ago. To be able to take care of my family I have the income provided by working in the fields, where my children are too.

I was one of the beneficiaries of the six water wells that the foundation financed in our area in 2007. Water is the most important need in my town. Before, I had to walk three hours to collect it and take it home, and it was also contaminated because all kinds of animals drank from it.

Due to the heavy load, we all ended up with back problems. We now have time and energy to do other tasks, and my family’s health has improved. We only have to walk 15 minutes to the well knowing that the water there is drinkable. We collect between 60 and 75 liters for our daily family consumption.
