Social Issue

In August of 2021, Haiti was affected by a new humanitarian crisis, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter having been located in the southwest region of, roughly 160 km from the capital, Port-au-Prince.

This disaster struck in a moment of severe crisis in Haiti. Just a month prior, the president, Jovenel Moïse, was killed in his house by a group of mercenaries, leaving the country in a state of political confusion and causing an empty space of power that various leaders and criminal groups competed for.

The capacity of response of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos was immediate. Recognised by more than 30 years of continued presence in the country, they managed to rapidly mobilise their forces to come to the aid of the population, and give medical and humanitarian attention to the families affected by the earthquake.

NPFS Haiti, together with the St Luc foundation, is tasked with carrying out the emergency aid in the affected areas of the country and is equally responsible for acquiring the basic supplies and taking care of those affected by the earthquake.

Our Response

Netri’s contribution is in response to the efforts to alleviate the effects of the emergency by having an emergency plan that prioritises short term solutions, acquiring and distributing medicine and medical supplies to hospitals and healthcare centres in the affected area.

As well as sending medical personnel to offer first aid treatment to the injured in isolated areas where there isn´t medical reach, and also distributing water, food, and hygiene products to affected communities.

The same plan incorporates offering refuge and clothing to those affected so they could be protected from tropical storms, as well as psychological help to overcome the humanitarian catastrophe, and planning new help in the mid and long term to help keep the families sustainable.
