Financial services for informal sector entrepreneurs
Indonesia, 2019
Social Issue
In 2018, Indonesia has 240 million inhabitants. According to the World Bank, 43% of the population (103 million) live below the poverty line, established at $2, according to purchasing power parity.
The most conservative official estimates consider that there are 10 million poor households in Indonesia. Also, another 10 million are in a vulnerable situation, since they are slightly above the national poverty line. In total, it is estimated that 9.8% of the population is below this threshold.
Our Response
We collaborate with PT Bina Artha Ventura (Bina Artha), an entity that grants microloans to groups of women who do not have access to the formal financial sector.
Currently, Bina Artha offers its services through an extensive network of almost 300 branches, reaching more than 300,000 clients on the islands of Java and Sulawesi, and plans to gradually expand to other islands in Indonesia.
Bina Artha was founded in 2011 as a Venture Capital Company (VCC) and its sole shareholder is Credit Access Asia (CAA), a Dutch group specialised in microfinance institutions in Asia.
Expected Social Impact
With this investment of the Netri Foundation, Bina Artha is expected to distribute more than 4,000 microcredits in the two-year duration of the project.
