Financial services for informal sector entrepreneurs
Kenya, 2013
Social Issue
Although Kenya’s economy ranks first amongst East and Central African economies, 36.9% of the population lives below the international poverty line of $1.90 a day, according to World Bank data. Most of the poor people in Kenya live in rural areas, mainly in the northeast of the country.
Our Response
Microloans are a powerful tool to provide more opportunities to rural communities subsisting thanks to agricultural activities.
Juhudi Kilimo is a microfinance institution specialised in agricultural finance. It also has training services and a new microinsurance programme aimed at farmers for the acquisition of productive assets such as dairy cows, chicken coops, irrigation equipment, and vehicles for the transport of milk. It has more than 13,000 clients and a credit investment of around four million euros.
Expected Social Impact
With this investment of the Netri Foundation, it is estimated that Juhudi Kilimo will be able to provide 297 microloans to people who live mainly in rural areas so that they can maintain their businesses. This way, the poverty caused by the lack of economic opportunities is reduced.
