Social Issue

It is not possible to find a library in the Mahiga region or within 50 kilometers around it, and very few students have their own books.

Our Response

The project involves the construction of a library inside Mahiga Hope High School, the only secondary school in the area.

The Netri Hope Library will serve more than 300 students at Mahiga Hope High School and 400 at the adjacent school, Saint Joseph Mahiga Primary School. The library will also be available to the rest of the community members.

The library will have approximately 2,500 volumes of which 1,500 have been financed by the Foundation. The books are in English and Swahili and were purchased in Kenya at an average cost of five dollars. There will also be a small amount in kĩkũyũ, the local language.

Expected Social Impact

It is hoped that with these new facilities, students will be better prepared and have a greater chance of success on national university entrance exams. It is also intended to improve the literacy level of the local adult population.
