Social Issue

Tercha is the administrative capital of the Dawro area, in the southern region, with around 5,458 residents. Currently, 65% of the children go to school, with a drop-out rate of 20%.

Before the renovation, the classrooms were made of mud, with very little light and ventilation, and an average of 126 students per classroom.

Our Response

The project consists in the construction and equipping of a new building with four classrooms, toilets, and the extension of pipes to transport water from the town to the school.

It is part of the overall project that will make the Tercha Complete Primary School have 18 classrooms instead of the 6 existing ones, a project financed by Netri Foundation in the aforementioned part.

Expected Social Impact

Once the project is finalised, the school will be capable of taking on, besides the 757 current students, 560 new students from nearby towns, reducing the number of students per class from 126 to 80. The school attendance rate in the district will increase from 65% to 70% and the drop-out rate is predicted to go down from 20% to 12%. A significant increase is therefore predicted in the number of students that will finish their secondary education.
