Construction of an elementary school
Burundi, 2009
Social Issue
Nkanda Hill is located in the Gatonde area, in the Nyabikere region, and has a population of 960 inhabitants. The lack of academic infrastructure has forced 347 school-age children to travel more than three and a half kilometres to access primary education in the town of Gatonde. The school is overcrowded – it has 1,590 students despite its capacity of 1,200.
Our Response
The project consists in the construction of a primary school in Nkanda with six classrooms, an administrative office, and a block of six toilets.
The school has been co-financed by the Netri Foundation and the Caja de Ahorros de Navarra.
Expected Social Impact
164 out-of-school children will access primary education thanks to the construction of the new school.
The construction of the Nkanda primary school will allow desaturation of the Gatonde classrooms and will save the long commute of the students to this town.
