Social Issue

One of the most common causes of school dropout among high school students in rural areas of the Anantapur and Kurnool districts is the long distances between their homes and the schools they attend, which can be from 3 to 9 kilometers.

The main difficulties in coping with the length of the journey are the lack of economic resources for the families, the absence of public transport, and the danger on rural roads, where, above all, girls can be victims of sexual abuse or assault.

All these factors push parents to force their daughters and sons to drop out of school, sometimes out of fear that something bad will happen to them, and others because they prefer that they start working to contribute to the family economy.

Our Response

In collaboration with the Fundación Vicente Ferrer and its local counterpart in India (Rural Development Trust), 321 bicycles will be delivered to students from sixth to tenth grade in the villages of N. Racharla, Pagidiroy, Gudibanda, Gorantlakadiri and Gandlapenta in the southeast of the country who do not have access to transportation.

In this way, a suitable, viable and safe transportation alternative has been provided to young people from families with limited financial resources, residing in villages with difficult access to secondary schools.

Since 2013, Netri has supported this project to provide bicycles, and with this contribution, a total of 2,273 bicycles will be distributed to young people.

Expected Social Impact

This project is expected to contribute to the improvement of the lives and social integration of 321 girls and boys between 12 and 16 years of age, in vulnerable situations, by facilitating the continuation of their secondary school studies.
