Construction of 6 wells and a distribution system to supply drinking water
Ethiopia, 2010
Social Issue
Access to drinking water was at absolutely critical levels in the Tigray region, in Senale. Families survived with an average of only 5 litres per person per day, well below the 15 litres that are internationally considered to be necessary. In addition, it was contaminated water, with a low level of sanitation, responsible for 80% of diseases as well as the high percentage of infant mortality in the region.
Our Response
The project consisted in the construction of four wells to supply the 941 inhabitants of Hadale, another well of greater scope for the 375 inhabitants of Genti, and a well up to 110 metres deep with four distribution points: one for the health center, one for the school and two for the Senale community.
To ensure the long-term sustainability of the project, the inhabitants were involved, creating a committee responsible for the operation and maintenance of the wells.
Expected Social Impact
This project is part of a global project with which it is intended that the percentage of the population with access to drinking water in Senale Tabia goes from the current 12% to 95% (increasing consumption from 5 to 15 litres/day) and that the collection time does not exceed thirty minutes.
With the donation, six wells were built to improve access to drinking water for 17,284 inhabitants in the Tigray region.
