When my husband abandoned my five children and me 25 years ago, I decided to start a business.

I asked for a first loan of $480 from the microfinance institution SPBD Tonga with which I bought raw materials to make straw baskets and tablecloths. I also dedicated a part of the loan to invest in the cultivation of agricultural products that began to provide me with a higher income than the other activities. Thanks to this, I invested in the agricultural business a second loan, of $550, and a third one of $800. I increased my line and quantity of products: Now I grow lettuce, cucumbers, beans, carrots, and tomatoes.

I have been able to buy a delivery van with which I distribute my products to the markets and restaurants in the area. My daughter and son-in-law help me full time and even my grandchildren like to collaborate during weekends. During harvest time, I can hire outside workers.

With the same entity, SPBD, I have a savings account, life, and health insurance.
