Social Issue

Rwanda has made significant progress in education, achieving an enrollment rate of 99%among school-age children. Between 2010 and 2019, school dropout and repetition rates decreased by 32% and 16%, respectively. However, student academic performance continues to be affected by hunger and malnutrition. To address this issue, in 2021 the government implemented the National School Feeding Program, which provides daily meals to 3 million children in all schools across the country. This program is part of a comprehensive strategy to combat hunger, promote human development, and improve access to education, especially for
low-income families.

Our Response

Since 2007, we have collaborated with the NGO Trust and Care to improve educational opportunities in the region. In 2021, we expanded our support to include subsidies for school lunches in day secondary schools, in response to a new government initiative requiring the provision of nutritious meals in public schools. Since then, we have supported 615 boarding secondary school students and 535 day secondary school students, as well as 50 primary school students, across 12 schools in two districts. All students have received school supplies, uniforms, backpacks, and hygiene products.

Expected Social Impact

Our commitment to the educational program has enabled us to provide a variety of opportunities for primary and secondary school students through the provision of educational resources, school meal subsidies, social assistance, health social security coverage, and tutoring programs. Between 2007 and 2022, Netri has supported 2,277 students, most of whom completed their secondary education in boarding schools. To measure the impact of our initiatives, Netri has commissioned a specialized consultant to conduct a detailed impact study.
