School meals to reduce hunger and promote access to education
Malawi, 2024
Social Issue
Hunger remains a major challenge in many countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, driven by factors such as conflict, extreme weather events, and economic instability.
It is estimated that in 2023, 238 million people faced acute food insecurity. Additionally, around 67 million primary school-aged children are out of school, most of them in Sub-Saharan Africa. School meals are essential for reducing hunger and improving school attendance.
Our Response
Mary’s Meals programs, active for over 20 years, combat child hunger and promote education by providing daily school meals. This approach improves attendance, academic performance, and future opportunities — all for less than €23 ($25.30) per child per year.
The model, run with the help of local volunteers such as parents and teachers, keeps costs low and strengthens community involvement. Netri will provide unrestricted funding for the school feeding program over the next three years, allowing flexibility in how the funds are used.
Expected Social Impact
In 2023, Mary’s Meals provided daily meals to nearly 2.4 million children in over 5,000 schools across 17 countries.
Netri’s donation will help feed approximately 2,700 children per year.
Annual evaluations monitor the program’s impact on attendance and learning. According to the 2023 report:
-
Hunger-related absenteeism dropped from 39% to 7%
-
Hunger-related school dropout fell from 30% to 7%.
-
99% of teachers confirmed that the meals reduce school dropout rates.
The program improves attendance, academic performance, and the overall well-being of children.
