Social Issue

The Lycée de Kounkané is an educational center where the Senegalese government covers all teaching staff costs. However, as often happens in rural areas, the local and regional governments lack sufficient resources for the construction of educational infrastructure. As a result, this responsibility is delegated to parents and teachers, leading to facilities being built year after year by hand using locally available natural resources. These infrastructures, made with natural and highly fragile materials, discourage both students and teachers from continuing the school year. The heat or rain prevents students from attending classes effectively, hindering their ability to achieve good results. Consequently, this impacts the development and opportunities of the students, the community, and the region.

Our Response

Since 2022, the Netri Foundation has supported the Guné Foundation by funding the construction of educational infrastructure in the most impoverished rural areas of Senegal. In 2022, Netri financed the construction of a cement classroom at the secondary school in the village of Soussotou. In 2023, it supported the construction of a classroom in Sinthiang Diwere.

This donation will fund the construction of a cement classroom at the school in Kounkané. Currently, the secondary school in Kounkané consists of 12 buildings, 6 of which are built with straw and reed, and the other 6 with cement. The school is attended by 736 students, 52% of whom are women.

Expected Social Impact

By providing improved infrastructure, an improvement in learning outcomes in the area is expected.
