Social Issue

Tajikistan faces a challenging economic environment and is classified as a low-income country globally, with a per capita income of just $1,390 annually (World Bank, 2023). The economic situation is even more difficult in rural areas, where infrastructure and access to financial services are limited. Although the country has shown resilience in the face of recent international crises, it continues to face significant structural challenges: an authoritarian political environment, border tensions with Afghanistan, currency risk, and a weakly supervised banking system. In this context, many low-income individuals, especially in remote areas, are excluded from the formal financial system, limiting their ability to engage in productive activities and perpetuating poverty.

Our Response

Netri has provided a loan in local currency to Humo, a microfinance institution based in Tajikistan. Humo was originally founded by CARE and USAID in 1998 as a microfinance program. Its mission is to provide affordable and high-quality financial services to people living in poor and remote rural areas, promoting and developing micro and small enterprises to create new economic opportunities for the population of the Republic of Tajikistan.
Significantly, 75% of Humo’s clients are located in rural areas.

Expected Social Impact

Netri’s loan is estimated to enable HUMO to disburse more than 1,100 productive microloans to low-income individuals in rural areas. These loans have an average size of $710 and are aimed at supporting income-generating activities, which help improve the economic stability of beneficiary households.
