Support for the purchase of 552 bicycles
Afghanistan, 2024
Social Issue
Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world, ranking 185 out of 193 in the 2023 Human Development Index. In the marginal neighborhood of Rimkieta, with 90,000 inhabitants, living conditions are extremely precarious, with no access to public transportation, healthcare, or education. High temperatures and long walking distances to school or to fetch water contribute to high school dropout rates. Additionally, women walk up to six kilometers daily for basic tasks. The country ranks 146 in the Gender Inequality Index.
Our Response
The project, managed by the Fundación Amigos de Rimkieta, facilitates the purchase of bicycles in Rimkieta to address the lack of transportation. The foundation offers a 50% subsidy for their purchase, including repair and maintenance services. Since 2018, Netri has supported the project, reaching a total of 2,352 bicycles distributed.
From its launch in June 2013 to March 2023, FAR has provided 6,460 bicycles.
Expected Social Impact
We understand the beneficiaries of the project to be the entire family unit, particularly children and women. By providing a bicycle to children, mobility is no longer a reason for school dropouts, directly contributing to their education.
For adults, the bicycle reduces the time and effort needed to complete daily tasks and opens up new employment opportunities by allowing them to travel farther and access a wider job market.
