Distribution of 332 bicycles to students
India, 2022
Social Issue
One of the most common causes of school dropout among high school students in rural areas of the Anantapur and Kurnool districts is the long distances between their homes and the schools they attend, which can be from 3 to 9 kilometers.
The main difficulties in coping with the length of the journey are the lack of economic resources for the families, the absence of public transport, and the danger on rural roads, where, above all, girls can be victims of sexual abuse or assault.
All these factors push parents to force their daughters and sons to drop out of school, sometimes out of fear that something bad will happen to them, and others because they prefer that they start working to contribute to the family economy.
Our Response
In collaboration with the Vicente Ferrer Foundation, 332 bicycles have been delivered to facilitate and provide educational continuity to secondary school students in the Adoni and Madakasira areas, and specifically in the Kosigi, Dhone and Lepakshi areas.
In this way, an adequate, viable and safe transportation alternative has been provided to young people from families with limited economic resources, who reside in villages with difficult access to secondary schools.
Expected Social Impact
This project has contributed to the improvement of life and the social integration of 332 girls and boys between 12 and 16 years old, by facilitating the continuity of their secondary education.
