Social Issue

Many families from unfavoured communities in the rural areas of India live in precarious homes built by themselves far from public services and under unhealthy living conditions.

Our Response

Since 1996, the Vicente Ferrer Foundation (FVF) has been working in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to guarantee conditions of habitability, functionality, structural safety and sanitation for the most disadvantaged.

In partnership with FVF, Netri will finance 12 of the 31 houses built in Kothapeta in the Adoni region.

Since 2006, Netri has supported the FVF’s housing construction program, and this project will bring the total number of houses built to 106.

These houses, built with the collaboration of the entire beneficiary community, have represented a turning point in their lives: they are, for the first time, an effective shelter from monsoon rains and the intense pre-monsoon heat, while guaranteeing protection from the stings of dangerous animals such as snakes and scorpions.

On the other hand, these houses have a space for personal hygiene that favors the safety of young girls and women, who avoid having to leave the village and expose themselves to numerous risks.

In addition, their construction has been adapted to the customs and materials available in the area. Thus, both the size and the form of construction have been in harmony with their environment.

Expected Social Impact

The main objectives of the project are as follows:

  • To provide houses in sanitary and hygienic conditions for 12 underprivileged families in Kothapeta.
  • To empower women: the new houses are deeded in their names. In this way, they obtain a property and an asset for the future of their children.
  • To encourage schooling: one of the requirements for receiving a house is that the children of the family of school age must attend classes in public schools in the area.
