Rehabilitation of the Eduardo Mondlane School
Mozambique, 2020
Social Issue
Education is a basic right and a fundamental instrument for the development of human capital, a necessary condition for reducing poverty. Mozambique has one of the highest levels of illiteracy in the world, particularly amongst women.
On the island of Ibo, in Cabo Delgado, there are four schools of which only one, the EPC Eduardo Mondlane school, serves as a secondary school. It welcomes 46% of the students and 54% of the teachers from all over the island. There is a high level of school dropouts present in Cabo Delgado, due a combination of factors listed below:
- premature pregnancies, leading to a high level of girls leaving school
- Low quality of teaching
- Prolonged absence of many teachers
- Lack of material and human resources
- Lack of motivation due to:
- Difficulty finding a job
- Difficulty getting access to technical schools or universities
In addition, it should be noted that school dropouts have worsened as a result of Cyclone Kenneth. This is due to the fact that the Government of Mozambique does not have the funds to be able to rebuild all the damaged schools, teacher absenteeism has increased due to the loss of their homes, and the growing need for parents to employ children as a source of support.
Our Response
The donation of Netri is focused on the reconstruction of the laboratory and library spaces of the Eduardo Mondlane School and is part of a larger project to reconstruct the school after the damage caused from the cyclone.
Expected Social Impact
It is expected that the rehabilitation of the school of Eduardo Mondlane Secondary School will encourage students and teachers to return to school, and reduce the amount of school absenteeism, which in turn should improve the learning outcomes of students.
