Social Issue

An estimated 2,500 million people worldwide lack a reliable and affordable supply of electricity. In recent years, there has been a significant reduction in the costs of photovoltaic technology, leading to the creation of many products designed to serve these communities in order to provide them with electricity and light.

Our Response

SunFunder LLC is dedicated to securing financing for solar energy projects in emerging markets that lack adequate infrastructure in their power grid to serve a significant portion of their populations. 99% of its current loans finance companies in Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Zambia).

Expected Social Impact

Since 2012, SunFunder has provided $8.4 million in loans with an average maturity of between 6 and 36 months to 22 clients. Most of these loans to finance inventory and its working capital cycle. With this funding, SunFunder calculates that it has helped 550,000 people access a cheaper, safer and higher quality source of light and electricity in their homes and businesses.

The impact of our contribution is around 30,000 beneficiaries.

This project has also been carried out in Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Zambia.
