Implementation of a management system in three clinics
Kenya, 2015
Social Issue
There is a clear deficit of affordable health services in Kenya. The public sector in Kenya plays an unusually small role in healthcare, and it is estimated that almost half of the poorest quintile of the population uses private clinics, most of which are unable to provide a full range of basic services.
Our Response
Miliki Afya is a company that aims to create a chain of clinics that offer high-quality outpatient and diagnostic care at low cost. It currently has three clinics located in Nairobi, Kawangware and Narok, serving 150 patients a day.
Expected Social Impact
This donation is part of a technical assistance initiative to support the implementation of a health information management system to improve efficiency and customer care. It is expected that by reducing costs and increasing volumes, Miliki Afya will be able to improve its profitability and scale, which will lead to more communities having access to high quality, affordable health care over time.
The motivation to support Miliki Afya in this project is to help validate their business model and to gain knowledge about the companies that serve the poorest communities in the health sector. As of today, sustainable and/or profitable models in this sector have their sights set on people with high incomes, or are highly specialised. However, companies such as Miliki Afya, which provide general health services to low-income segments of the population, are very incipient and have yet to be verified.
