Financial services for informal sector entrepreneurs
Kyrgyzstan, 2011
Social Issue
Kyrgyzstan is a low-income country. From all the states in Europe and Central Asia, it ranks in the penultimate position in terms of gross national income (GNI). 32% of the population lives below the poverty line.
One of the most important factors to consider is the lack of access to adequate banking and financial services by a large part of the population, which impedes the country’s economic growth.
Our Response
Microloans are a powerful tool to provide opportunities to excluded and marginalised communities.
OXUS was part of the French NGO ACTED until it became independent from it in 2006. Its objective is the fight against poverty by offering affordable financial services to workers with very few resources.
Expected Social Impact
With this investment of the Netri Foundation, it is estimated that OXUS will be able to provide 586 microloans to people who live especially in rural areas. In this way, they will be able to maintain their businesses and the poverty caused by the lack of economic opportunities will be reduced.
