Donation of 1,602 books
Burundi, 2011
Social Issue
Burundi is one of the ten poorest countries in the world, after a war that has greatly undermined its economy and scared away any kind of outside investment initiatives. The country is in a desperate level of poverty in which the level of education, the illiteracy of the population, the shortage of teachers, the overcrowding of classrooms and the high drop-out rate in schools due to economic reasons are among the most pressing problems.
Our Response
The Foundation has donated 1,500 textbooks (suitable for the national academic curriculum) to the Ngozi Province Provincial Board of Education. Books can be found at the provincial school library.
This library is the only one in the entire province and is intended for the student population, who will be able to access it during each year’s school period. For the same purpose, a donation of 102 books has also been made to the Gatonde library, open to the general public but with a specific study section for students and teachers in the area.
Expected Social Impact
The objective of this programme is to reinforce the academic quality and learning capacity of the school population in the Karusi region.
