Social Issue

The situation of children in rural Malawi is extreme. Most of them go to school walking long distances without having eaten any kind of food, which greatly hinders their learning. In most families in rural areas, the most basic resources are scarce. They only feed once a day, at night, with a dish of nsima, a corn flour porridge, accompanied by some vegetables.

Our Response

The objective of the project is to cover the food of all students during their first year at the Mpangweni Primary School, Malawi.

It is proven that eating nutritious food first thing in the morning increases the students’ attention level and improves their performance.

The entity in charge of the school food system, Mary’s Meals, has a network of workers who travel to different villages to check and review the state of the different schools, the distribution of food, the correct use of raw materials and the effectiveness of volunteer mothers’ shifts who cook and distribute food.

The nutritional effects of the application of the programme can be seen at a glance on the health of students, parents, and teachers.

Expected Social Impact

Other favourable results, a direct consequence of the feeding program, are:

  • A reduction in the financial burden for feeding children by the poorest families living in rural areas.
  • A decrease in school absenteeism.
  • An increase in the school’s educational level and the percentage of students getting to secondary education.
  • Greater involvement of parents in school life.

This donation will benefit around 625 children.
