Social Issue

The rate of illiteracy in Nepal is worryingly high. In the Chepang the problem is even worse, only half the population know how to read or write, while only 1% of the women are literate. A good explanation for it is the low-quality training the teachers get, the challenging life conditions of local families (that have to prioritise their chores at home or the jobs their children do instead of their education).

On top of that, the geographical conditions (long walking distances to school and absence of electricity, water and infrastructure contribute to absenteeism).

Bahadur’s objective is to favor each one of these circumstances, helping the local personnel and cooperating with the government, the school and families, to offer new educational conditions and to make families more aware of the importance of education.

Our Response

Bahadur Social Project (BSP) is an NGO that works with socially excluded groups in Nepal, like the Chepang, one of the most vulnerable indigenous groups in the country. The activities of BSP are centered on education and health to:

  • Develop skills in the personnel, to improve the quality of teaching.
  • Offer food in schools to promote the assistance and decrease the levels of malnutrition.

Netri Foundation is supporting BSP in the construction of a kitchen and a dining room in the Shree Tumka, located in Bhumlichok (a village in the Northern area of central Nepal). Also they plan to install a PVC pipeline so that the school has a water source BSP has settled a deal with the local government that will see them taking care of the costs of the daily meals in the school.

Expected Social Impact

It’s expected that this donation will enable:

  • 100 students between 2-15 years old to benefit from having food daily. The project started before January of 2021 and has seen an increase in school assistance.
  • Reduction in malnutrition. BSP conducts a follow up of the biometric data of the school students, to make sure that the standards of BMI set by the WHO are increasing.
  • The students will benefit from clean water in school. Also 400 individuals will have access to clean water.
