Social Issue

The Diocese of Garissa covers a population of around 50,000 inhabitants, of which more than 16,000 are children between 6 and 14 years of age. Of these, around 80% live below the poverty line.

Our Response

The Emmaus Mission in the Diocese of Garissa wants to offer children in the Tana River area adequate educational infrastructure. In 2005, the San José primary school was launched, with a capacity for 400 children. With the donation of the Netri Foundation it is intended to carry out the renovation of the structures of the classrooms, corridors, and toilets, as well as the incorporation of new furniture.

The aim of the project is to improve the access to and the quality of education for children from poor families in the 10 villages in the Tana River district, through the refurbishing of the Mission’s current school building, the San José primary school, run by the diocese itself.

Expected Social Impact

It is expected to be able to benefit 500 students from Tana River County by giving them a higher quality education.
