Social Issue

Maternal and neonatal mortality in Ethiopia, as in many other parts of Africa, remains a problem and a major challenge at a sanitary level.

In Ethiopia, approximately 60 women die every day from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth, as well as 280 babies also die daily, and one in three pregnancies ends with the death of the fetus. These deaths are in most cases preventable.

Our Response

The donation of materials for the maternity ward at Woldya’s hospital carried out by the Foundation is part of a global project performed by IPI Cooperació, the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia, UNICEF, and IFHP (Integrated Family Health Planning). The aim is to improve the health of pregnant women, mothers, and babies in and around the city of Woldya, in the Amhara region.

This improvement is achieved by facilitating these women access to all areas of health care, and by improving their availability and quality.

This is a pilot project that, if successful, will also be carried out in other areas of the country.

Expected Social Impact

The donation consisted of an ultrasound machine, two suction machines, three autoclaves, a refrigerator, a CTG machine, and several utensils typical of childbirth. Medical devices and accessories that will make the maternity ward at Woldya’s hospital meet the medical standards that guarantee a dignified service to patients.

1,500 women go annually to the maternity ward of the hospital to give birth: 500 during pregnancy, and 1,340 in the postpartum period. Therefore, the number of beneficiaries of the project ascends to 3,340 women.
