Construction of 28 wells to supply drinking water
Ethiopia, 2012
Social Issue
The population of the Oromia region, like in many other parts of Ethiopia, suffers from the lack of drinking water. Specifically, in the area around Mendida, the population with access to drinking water does not reach 50%.
Our Response
In partnership with A Glimmer of Hope, Netri is financing the construction of the 20 wells that will provide drinking water to 75% of the population.
The wells were built in the villages (kebeles) of Doyo Dawe, Gadula Moye, Adare Ejersa, Kardaga Salayish, Nasrri Tirigni, and Muti, and benefit a total of 4,400 members of these communities.
On the other hand, in the Arsi area, only 20% of the population had access to drinking water. The eight wells that were built in the towns of Bamo Chefa and Dinkiti gave access to drinking water for the area’s 1,868 residents.
Expected Social Impact
This project is expected to generate the following results:
- The creation and formation of a well-maintenance committee made up of six
people, of whom three must be women. - Holding health workshops, both in schools and to other members of the
community. - Training in hygiene and sanitation for local government personnel in the
education and health areas. - The management of community funds for the wells maintenance, and other
projects related to water.
