Social Issue

The most conservative official estimates consider that there are 10 million poor households in Indonesia. Ten million more are in a vulnerable situation being just above the poverty line. According to the World Bank, about 43% of the Indonesian population, out of a total of 240 million inhabitants, is below this threshold set at $2, in purchasing power parity terms. In 2010, 16% of the population was below $1.25 taking into account the same criteria.

Our Response

Mitra Bisnis Keluarga (MBK) is a microfinance institution with a 100% female clientele that follows the Grameen Bank methodology. It is one of the few institutions in Indonesia focused on the poorest population.

MBK’s objective is to improve the living conditions of a significant number of households that are among the 25% with the lowest income of the population. MBK wants to reduce the vulnerability of underfunded households, improve their dignity and confidence, and empower women.

Expected Social Impact

With this investment of the Netri Foundation, MBK is expected to distribute more than 5,000 microcredits a year and about 15,000 in the almost three-year duration of the project, helping approximately 75,000 people.
